I haven't looked much into how translations are handled in FUDforum, but
I'm not surprised you found them very well done since I found the same
thing is the case with the skins, it's is really straightforward to
personalise the look of FUDforum.

Also I find the feedback from the developers to bug reports couldn't be
better. I found that the ML import feature wasn't able to handle POP3
over SSL (only POP3/STARTTLS), so I reported it and they provided a
patch in less than 24 hours!

I'm sold on FUDforum and I would highly recommend to whoever will be
deciding on the Mageia forum to do a test install of FUDforum and check
it out too, the ML gateway feature and the well implemented threading is
already reason enough to chose FUDforum (but the remaining features are
easily on par with phpBB and myBB too).

Hi Lucien,

As you may know (or may not) this project started rather quickly with a
great amount of energy and many positive reactions. But the plans were
not precise because people did not have the time to plan it minutely :)

So this project WILL have a public governance as stated on "New grounds"
chapter on http://mageia.org

Having a self-proclaimed board (made of the core people on whom the
distribution used to rely for building and realease roadmaps) for the
first year while we try to make our beloved distribution survive is
something i consider neither illogical not illegitimate :)

So even if the board is not precisely named i can guess a number of
names that could appear in the list without shocking me :)

If you're old enough in mandrake/mandriva i think you can even have a
better gess :)

> I believe that the old worker of Mandriva are the most activs. But it

>
> I don't doubt that the governance of the project is not null ... But
> we, others of "who maintain the list", we don't see anything.
>
Well it's all over again the myth of the one-month-child :)

(For those who do not know about this "myth" think about this : while
one woman can have a baby in nine months, with nine women you'll never
be able to have a baby in one month ^^)

At the moment there are a very little number of "babies" : the build
system (highest priority, requires money from the donations), the web
servers ( lower priority because we have temporary replacement sites
like the blog and the root website )

These "babies" we cannot put many womens to have them... that would make
no sense to send zillions of people to bring servers in a datacenter
(and the datacenter owner would not let many enter)... same thing for
servers (even if there will be 5 or 6 in the build system) install and
configuration : a handful of sysadmins are enough for that... having a
man per keyboard key would not speed up things you can trust me :)

And before physical and software install, the design of global
architecture and proof of concept made on sandbox machines cannot be
charged on more than 2 or 3 guys :)

That's just common sense... :)

> Who is actually the captain, or most contributers ?
>
Actually we have ennael whom i consider the person currently nearest
from this idea of "captain". But at the moment, to find a place in a
datacenter, design the future build system and install a handful of rack
servers we cannot parallelize more i guess :)

And those who work on these tasks know perfectly what to do (i would bet
on that) so they do not need a "captain"

Later, the infrastructure, once up and running, will allow many people
to work simultaneously. Please just give people time to set up this
first stone of the building :)

> Who is the team who decide the rules like : to put TXT format and not
> HTML format in the mail of the list ? Or to speak only in english ? Or
> to do only RPM and not DEB ? This 3 late days, I have only seen this
> kind of movement.
>
For the first that's just a rule shared by every opensource project i
know... it's just common sense again : many people do use pure text mail
readers like mutt or pine... if you send html people will see rubbish
full of <div><div><span><ul><li><i><b><a
href="http://blahblah.blah/page">link to
read</a></b></i></li><ul></span></div></div><table><th><td>something
else to read</td><tr><td>....

And for people who use mobile mail readers, html makes emails soooo
sloooow to download :-(

For english it's again common sense as english is the lowest common
denominator for communications, hence it's a de-facto standard used in
every big opensource community :)

> So, I think I (and a lot of others) will take more confidence in this

That imho can be said without big concern...

We know that many Windows users refuse to migrate to GNU / Linux because of the
differences between these two environments. A critical point is the difference
between the programs used to perform common tasks.

Thinking about it, I had the idea of creating a Mageia Welcome Center. What is
this? Basically, when Mageia is installed and user will do his first login - or
when a new user is created and will do your first login, after loading the
desktop environment, a window like the one I drew below will appear:

http://img831.imageshack.us/img831/925/mageiawelcome.png

This is a simple idea: this window will show friendly descriptions to commom
tasks besides icons of programs used to perform them. So the user will associate
the program that needs to use the task that needs doing. When user clicks icon
or text, the associated program will be launched.

Of course, future we can disable the icons of programs that are not installed or
provide a way to add more options.

This certainly is a small and easy-to-do program that can be developed in
minutes and hides a great easter egg ;)

PS: I have the original SVG if someone is interested.

I like it too. But it reminds me of the Mandriva welcome page:

The welcome "center" could well be the Mageia welcome page, in the same
sense that the Mandriva welcome page had appeared. It could have your
suggested layout, and a "help" tab/pane/button that would go to the welcome
text + have links to help documentation.

Said that, I think a newbie would appreciate a page that would direct him/her
to some documentation like "What can I do with my new OS?", "How do I access
my files/programs?" "How can I configure/fix things?" etc.

Said that (flash #2), we may have a dual system of keeping those docs: a cached
version stored in an rpm[1] package, and a big button on those (html?) pages
like: "go to latest version of this page on the Internet". That way, an offline
first installation (before network is functional) will still be able to read
docs.

Let's keep on topic, yes?

A good idea would be to keep a wiki page listing all the aspects of
Mageia we want...
like, "We want RPM, we want plain-text mails only, we want a cool logo", etc...

If you do that, people can go there for reference, and if we agree on

Besides, it's temporary, and you will probably be able to split it up
into sections later.

But let's just keep a disambiguation page of jumbled stuff first.

Hmm, how would that be different to the discussion we have here? Do
you think in the wiki people would be less responsive and/or numerous
with their opinions, ideas, discussions than on this list?

Here we have "We want RPM" in the first mail, then "Think about deb"
in the secons mail, in the third mail someone talks about a tool, in
the 4th mail there is a reply to the first mail, etc. It's chaotic,

I don't think so. I am a forum guy and I like wikis but for

There are technical reasons for some things, in the rpm vs. deb threads it has
been answered a few times. There are not really any technical reasons to
change from rpm to deb and it would produce so much work, we could giv it up
before we start. Kepping the point asside that there are quite a few

This is the usual way in every mailing list I know, and it has a reason. html
mails make things like quoting parts of them a mess and it produces much
overhead. html mails are one of the biggest mistake in the history of the
internet

IMHO that people is going too far in this moment. I mean, far in the future.

Think that we have almost nothing yet. Not even the most important and
basic elements to build the distro. So, people is asking to add
features to a distro that can't be built yet.

With time, Mageia will have all it's needed (build system, bug
tracking, web server, etc etc.). And, of course, some place to drop
ideas. Maybe something like "ideas.mandriva.com" or Mandriva's
bugzilla. Who knows.

Don't feel disappointed. Please, keep your ideas in mind. Be patient
and wait for the right moment to drop it in the right place.

IMHO that wiki is to "slow". IRC is too "real time". MLs are the right
mix between both. With MLs you have enough time to think and write

 +
Founders of Mageia project are working hard in many "fields". One of
those fields is to write founding documents.

IMHO that we could/should provisionally rely on these:

* Etiquette for mailing lists:
http://wiki.mandriva.com/en/Docs/Support/Mailinglists/Etiquette

* Code of conduct: http://wiki.mandriva.com/en/Code_of_Conduct

And I said "provisionally" because I guess we'll have our own rules.
But I don't think that courtesy and respect will be absent in our
rules. In fact, I think "our rules" will be pretty much the same as
the links I posted.

For those who don't know these documentos, please, take a few minutes
and read them.

I'm sending this mail to mageia-dev / mageia-discuss / mageia-i18n
lists. But as separate e-mails.

Cheers!

May I emphasize your point about IRC:
IRC has one major drawback. All information, ideas, opinions given on
IRC are only available to those people who are present in the moment
when such ideas, opinions and informations are given/discussed. All
other people (the vast majority) is not present, even dedicated IRC

So IMHO important issues should never be discussed on IRC, less
somebody posts related excerpts on the mailing list related to the

IRC is good for short question/answer communication to solve a problem
at hand, IRC is good for scheduled meetings of not too large groups
(8-10 participants to the max to be productive). But it is not suited

I guess the Welcome Center could also be a place to offer two other
links/tools :

- A button to link directly to the community page, introducing the
forums and all the other community services.
- Display on the welcome screen basic hardware information : Processor,
RAM, video card and the driver currently activated.
- A link to sysinfo:// that offers some hardware information that could
fit inside the welcome center as it is a simple HTML layout. On that
page, there can be a link directly to Harddrake to get even more
information. Getting system information easily is actually a thing many
distros miss, apparently.

But there should be a warning light on such a welcome center : beware
the windows-like thing. We really need to think about a new and useful
design.

it would be better just a link to the hardware tool, harddrake in our

Maybe firts, you should decide what would the Welcome Center do.

I mean, Kaptan is a configuration tool.

I'd put more weight on the information part.

It should guide the user to all relevant places for up-to-date
information about Mageia, to help pages (the wiki), to discussion and
support places like the forums, etc., preferrably in the language he
sets when installing the system.

Then you can add internal links to the control center, to
softwaremanagement, to hardware information.

Reason: After installation what he needs first in case of problems is
addresses he can turn to to get help. Other places are easily found in
the start menue (a section "Top Apps / Tools" would help there) but
there are no links to helping people in the menue.

I found both aproaches really atractive and useful.

Kaptan looks very intuitive, easy and centralize most (if not all) the
most common and basic settings that a person with basic knowledge
could need after the first boot.

However, wobo's aproach is also important. What happends if
Kaptan-like-tool hangs in the first boot and close? That's where info
page will be really really useful. This is an extreme example, but I
think I presents the idea well. A newbie will be almost "naked and
screaming" without to know where to go for help.

But, if Kaptan-like-tool doesn't hang and works fine, it's always
important to let people know where they have to go if anything goes
wrong or where to meet other user. You never know when a user could
become an important contributor.

Cheers!

Any decision will depend on timing, ie: Where LibreOffice is when a Mageia
build is avaialble.

Right now LibreOffice is limited in terms of l10n, that will change.

It is hoped that Oracle will come on board and contribute as part of the
foundation including the ownership of the OpenOffice.org name and branding.
The pressure for this change is not new, the OOo community has wanted a
foundation from the beginning and SUN, the original owners, had said that was
their long term goal.

There is some uncertainty as to Oracle's future support and that has driven
this initiative.

I've been with the OOo community since the beginning and I support this as do
a lot of the core active community members and a significant number of the
paid devs.

What I would like to see is the new Distro penning a note of support and at
this early moment, (only a symbolic gesture, I know) going with LibreOffice as
the default OOo version

Cheers

Of course. It's the most "logical" decision.

But I think Graham means which office suite will be the "default" one
shipped in the installation media. I like the idea of supporting
LibreOffice. If anything goes wrong, you always can do an "urpmi

Along with the Welcome Center idea, the one consisting in making a sort
of presentation or guided tour during the setup process is one I like a
lot.

If you look back in Mandrake's history, this was in fact used by the
past. Look this setup capture of Mandrake 9.1 Bamboo :
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f5/Mandrake91setup.png

Basically, there are two solutions :

- Modify the advertisement images into ones that show the different
components, possibilities and advantages Mageia has to offer. BUT
currently, they would only be images and this won't help localization,
as people would have to duplicate the images. Easy (I did it for my
Moblin LiveCD), but not practical...

- Looking at the Bamboo's DrakX, and believing the core of the DrakX
Installation Program has not fundamentally changed, I guess it is
possible to restore the ability to place texts on advertisements as you
can see on the screenshot. Translators would then just have to edit a
.po file to translate these texts in their own language.

I was also thinking that a calm music (that can be turned off) during
the setup process would be nice to welcome the users who install the
system in graphical mode (offering a visible text mode install is
perhaps also needed, considering that I had many people asking me for
this).

Without modifying the code itself too much, we would be able to revamp
the appearance of our good old DrakX as well. :)

Main problem with Kaptan is that being a KDE tool. Otherwise, freezing
on first boot should not a problem. We can set a default configuration
for this purpose and user changes this configuration according to
his/her taste via Kaptan. So if it s***ks on first screen then nothing
