</I>&gt;&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> Hi Jeff, it took a little more time than I thought but I have found
</I>&gt;<i> the cause and the cure for the problem with nfs-server function on
</I>&gt;<i> Mageia 1. In the process I learned how to use an rpm source package to
</I>&gt;<i> patch and rebuild the offending file for the nfs-utils package.
</I>&gt;<i> Tomorrow; the World!
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> First up, the problem is well known and of quite some vintage. It only
</I>&gt;<i> affected nfs-utils v1.2.3 so versions just prior and subsequent (as in
</I>&gt;<i> v1.2.5 in Mageia 2 Cauldron) are OK. Hence the Mandriva 2010.2 worked
</I>&gt;<i> as did my MGA2 Beta1 server.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> This reference tells the whole story;
</I>&gt;<i> <A HREF="https://bugzilla.linux-nfs.org/show_bug.cgi?id=190">https://bugzilla.linux-nfs.org/show_bug.cgi?id=190</A>
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> So the proposed fix was first seen in October 2010. I have used the
</I>&gt;<i> proposed patch to rebuild the nfs-utils-1.2.3-2.1.mga1 package and it
</I>&gt;<i> works perfectly well with the --ports option for rpc.mountd.
</I>
Very good.

&gt;<i> In the course of all this I can confirm your observation that in a
</I>&gt;<i> fresh MGA1 install of the nfs server the RPCMOUNTD_OPTIONS= entry is
</I>&gt;<i> blank in /etc/sysconfig/nfs-server. My guess is that it is only set to
</I>&gt;<i> a specific port number when you use the personal firewall with a hole
</I>&gt;<i> for NFS. I don't see how you could configure the firewall if the
</I>&gt;<i> listening port were to be some random value, so I reckon it's a good
</I>&gt;<i> guess.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> I'll report this bug for the MGA1 package and we should have the fixed
</I>&gt;<i> version out quite soon.
</I>
This is an age old issue with these tools since they were originally
designed to use random ports prior to the common use of client
firewalls. I've been hacking their config files since I first started
using Linux to force them to use specific ports and it's always been a
PITA. As annoying as these issues are they are at least not as bad as
trying to get Samba to work in a heterogeneous network. Glad you got it
figured out.

While this is a feature not present yet, but on the TODO file of urpmi-proxy:

I've been thinking along these lines:

1) delete older versions of the same file in the same directories
2) give a configurable max size and delete the older files if the size is
reached
3) give a configurable time limit and delete all files older than this one (in a
cronjob)

that being said, there are a couple of things you can do:
A) do a find with a time limit and remove the older files
B) rsync with a mirror (with --delete option)
C) rsync with a mirror (but find some option to only delete the removed files
and nothing else)

for A) i likely can make a quick shell script to do that, but i think rsyncing
with could be the quickest way...

which would you prefer?

If size of folder is too large, then
 remove old versions until size is under limit
 if no more old versions, then
 remove eldest files until size is under limit

Easiets to apply per folder only

Will be complicated to apply globally
Maybe by &quot;outer control loop&quot; that adjust down max size per folder if total
limit is reached. )

So if the OP suddenly realise he need more space for other thinks he can just
adjust down urpmi-proxy max size and trigger the cleaning, and all he will get
space easily, prioritising is taken care of.

... i will stop fantasising now...

&gt;<i> that being said, there are a couple of things you can do:
</I>&gt;<i> A) do a find with a time limit and remove the older files
</I>
&gt;<i> B) rsync with a mirror (with --delete option)
</I>
It must not download packages not already present, thus:

&gt;<i> C) rsync with a mirror (but find some option to only delete the removed
</I>&gt;<i> files and nothing else)
</I>
&gt;<i> for A) i likely can make a quick shell script to do that, but i think
</I>&gt;<i> rsyncing with could be the quickest way...
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> which would you prefer?
</I>
C - with some check so it do not remove all files if the mirror have some
problem or is offline making it look completely empty....

For the imminent need i simply opened the folders in GIU file browser, sorted
on size and manually clicked the old version of the 20 largest packages in
each folder, saved a gigabyte.

So i am good for now.
Just thinking about the future for me and other users.

We have a constitution of rules for the association. We may perfectly
update these to properly handle such a case, but before that, it would
reinforce these if we stick to them. It's not about being overly
bureaucratic, but indeed, I find there's an issue here:
 - do they get a seat at the board, because there's room to fill or
because they are elected into it? that's pretty different;
 - if the former reason is true, how could the board prevent an
unwanted candidate to join? (I have nothing against the candidates
here, it's a question about our constitution design).

Now, on the technical/setup bit: if managing epoll is too
complex/cumbersome, shall we consider alternative/existing platforms
for that? or advertise/sponsor further development so it's a matter of
&quot;new poll&quot; &gt; &quot;name&quot; &gt; &quot;who can vote&quot; &gt; &quot;proposals&quot; &gt; &quot;deadline&quot; &gt;

Well, that's exactly how epoll work. Just that we lack documentation on

The main problem is more a lack of time to do that and the rest, and

</I>&gt;&gt;<i> procedures clear up front and to stick to them, even when they might seem
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> overly bureaucratic to us now. In the future, when we might face issues,
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> it is good to have established procedures we can point to instead of
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> having people claim &quot;but you did x back then&quot;.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i>Nice try, but as seen on -dev, when i try to follow the procedure and
</I>&gt;<i>rules, people complain, and when i don't, people ask me to do so.
</I>
Well, first of all, people will always find something to complain about...

That said, and assuming you are referring to what I think you are
referring to... I think in that case the confusion is about what the
policy really is. The criteria as mentioned in the last meeting seem to
differ from what I read on the -dev list now. I don't care much one way or
the other, but I think here too being clear on the policy is the most
important thing.

Secondly, and I do mean this in the nicest and most constructive way...
it would not hurt if also other developers / council members would speak
their mind when such things come up. For this we need 1) them to speak up
more, 2) for you to not to speak on their behalf when you have not
consulted them yet.

Cheers,

Remco

</I>&gt;<i> &gt;
</I>&gt;<i> &gt; 1) delete older versions of the same file in the same directories
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> That is the best.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> ( I wonder if it shold be possible to keep old versions, but if any client
</I>&gt;<i> needs it it will simply be downloaded again, and i guess it will not happen
</I>&gt;<i> very often. skip list seems overkill. )
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> &gt; 2) give a configurable max size and delete the older files if the size is
</I>&gt;<i> &gt; reached
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> Yes. Size per folder or whole urpmi-proxy, or both?
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> &gt; 3) give a configurable time limit and delete all files older than this
</I>&gt;<i> &gt; one (in a cronjob)
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> That should be able to be set by folder, i.e i want to give mga1 2 years,
</I>&gt;<i> (to facilitate new installs or reinstalls) but cauldron only a couple
</I>&gt;<i> months.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> How would theese be combined?
</I>&gt;<i>

</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> If size of folder is too large, then

</I>&gt;<i> if no more old versions, then
</I>&gt;<i> remove eldest files until size is under limit
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> Easiets to apply per folder only
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> Will be complicated to apply globally
</I>&gt;<i> Maybe by &quot;outer control loop&quot; that adjust down max size per folder if total
</I>&gt;<i> limit is reached. )
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> So if the OP suddenly realise he need more space for other thinks he can
</I>&gt;<i> just adjust down urpmi-proxy max size and trigger the cleaning, and all he
</I>&gt;<i> will get space easily, prioritising is taken care of.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> ... i will stop fantasising now...
</I>[...]

I was rather thinking to have the old files removed on-demand...

ie: if you're requesting foo-2.3.4-5.mga2, i can safely remove foo-2.3.4.4mga2
in the same path. (if at all possible, maybe i would also try to remove
packages which are obsoleted by this package; but i donno if that's easily and
efficiently doable, though )

thus keeping everything nice and tidy.

about the other two parts, i didn't think about limiting it per folder or
something, it seems like quite some configuration to be done, and rather
complex...

i'll think about that later...

however, you did give me the idea that maybe it would be interesting to clean
older files in folders which have the highest request rates or maybe the most
recent request rates...

this would clean up older files which are not often requested in folders which
seem to update frequently, thus in folders which have the lowest cache-hit-
rates

<PRE>Hi,

given the fact that we basically never use the board for anything
( there was no meeting in 1 year, almost no mail, ie, everything was
done by council ), and given the fact that basically, we do not even
respect our own procedure (ie what the use for me to keep track of who
is member of the association if we vote on irc without checking quorum
or anything ), I would suggest that we massively simplify the whole
organisation by removing the board altogether.

Ie, we just keep the council, and that's all.

We did nothing of what we said we would, no one seems to bother enough
or to understand the difference between board and council, or is
motivated to keep them separate. So that's no use to keep it.

As a side note, whatever will result of this discussion and due to the
meeting of council tonight, I would like to immediately resign from my
position of secretary, my position on board and on council as packager
representative.
