If you're referring to my report of mkinitrd failing,
<A HREF="https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=44">https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=44</A>
I'm still working on getting a kernel compiled using 100 HZ
instead of 1000 HZ, to confirm that is the cause of the
problem.

For some reason, the server kernel won't boot in VirtualBox,
on this system.

I compiled the kernel once already (took about 48 hours),
but didn't have enough space in the / file system for
the install, and ended up with a non-bootable Virtual system.

I've reinstalled, after moving the .vdi file from an ext4
filesystem to an ext2 filesystem, which improved responsiveness
enough to allow the mkinitrd to finish, during the install.

I'm now about 24 hours into compiling the kernel, and will
update the bug report when I have stats on the difference.

I'll dig further into the server kernel failing to boot once
I'm done with compiling/testing this kernel (desktop kernel
with only the HZ option changed).

Regards, Dave Hodgins

</I>&gt;<i> Yes, we DID tell everybody that it is a not-for-use and not-for-review
</I>&gt;<i> alpha version. But as people are, we could not avoid such &quot;reviews&quot;.
</I>
Yes. And there is nothing wrong or bad or whatever about that. That's
just to be expected and why warning signs were put along the alpha
release: at the least, there were warning signs. :-)

The point of a technical release is not to impress people but to
provide a sample freeze in the state of development for contributors.
It a public release because that's how we expect it to happen.

Of course, some people may be deceived, not impressed, negative - we
can't and we won't please everyone. That's life and that's only a part
of the whole picture. We just have to sort out the useful bits out of
that.

&gt;<i>From this very review, it seems it's more about the differenciation
</I>with Mandriva that is not obvious (identity switch, both in artwork
and in software behaviour). Well... yes, of course, at this point. But
said again, ok.

We said it from day 1 and will repeat it, even the final June release
is not planned to be a totally breaking new/different distribution
than what we had with Mandriva before: it will be an updated, clean,
strong, stable platform, as a solid foundation for: daily use (desktop
and server at least), easy migration, further developement and to
start the real change/work for Mageia 2 where we expect bigger changes
to occur.

Now, of course, taking this road may:
 * not be fully understood: we can explain more and again what we did
(we did a very significant amount of work in building up again a full
factory and in gathering people and releasing a first test ISO, all
that in 5 months) and what we will do; but we won't be overly loud
about it either; what matters for users is the final whole product;
 * and seen as very conservative - and it is. And we need that.
Because we're not just building a distribution (very short term final
release being June), we are building the project as well: people
involved/joining in the project, governance, mission, goals; that's a
way longer term and it has to occur concurrently with our first
release making.

We're not running a race against Mandriva (because that's actually the
point of the above review), we're running our path, picking what we
will find fits, and trying to keep on our schedule.

And it goes through involving more largely the whole community into
the making of the Mageia distribution and project. That is the point.

<PRE>
When I set up a new computer I have to do 2 steps till the computer is ready to us.
First, install Mageia (or another OS), second configure the installed OS and applications.
First one is easy throught the GUI installer. The second needs more effort, because I have to start near every programm for configuration.

So, I thought we could write a wizzard which helps to make step 2 easier.
I'm thinking about a tool in which I can configure things like:
personal details (name etc.), for programms like Libre Office, Evolution etc. [is this integrated into OS-installer?]
Email accounts, calenders, import contact file, etc. (Evolution/Kontact)
Kopet / Pidgin chat accounts
Firefox (start page, import favorites, install addons,..)
Set desktop background, number of virtual desktops,..
Define autostart (suggestions: kopet, firefox,..)

I've the tool was started the first time (right after installation), one could also do:
Add new users [included in installation ?]
Activate guest account
Set update configuration
Add printer/scanner
Download some often used restricted packages:
 multimedia codecs
 SUN Java
 Windows Fonts
 Flash
 ..

If this would be implemented in Perl/Gtk, we maybe could use some configuration windows from MCC.

What do you think about this idea?
I know R1 won't have new features, this tool could may get integrated later.

<PRE>We all know that, nowadays, Ubuntu is the distribution most widely used and
known worldwide. Many users are afraid to try other distros because they are
accustomed to Ubuntu and many remasters are Ubuntu or Debian based.

We also know that RPM-based distros are not anything DEB-based distros and often
are more stable and faster. URPMI is incomparably superior to apt-get.

The four major community-driven RPM-based distros nowadays are: Mageia,
OpenSuse, Fedora and PCLinuxOS.

All these distros can work together to promote the use of RPM distros and help
in their own developments.

Even though the development team mageia is busy with the roadmap of development,
I would propose the creation of...

 T H E [ R E D ] A L L I A N C E

... which would be a global network where developers and users of these
distributions could exchange knowledge and information and share resources to
assist in developing mutual their distros.

Today we know that a RPM developed for OpenSuse may not work properly in Fedora.
With the Red Alliance, we could create a common development basis, through which
could enhance the compatibility and interoperability of programs developed for
these distros with the establishment of common guidelines and further increase
market share and convince users that they will feel at home.

The goal is not to merge all the distros, but work together. The idea should be
further developed, but this seems an appropriate way.

Just a &quot;heads up&quot;, since I was puzzled as to why urpmi kept trying to
install the unsigned packages. If you stopped urpmi from installing the
unsigned packages, you'll need to run 'urpmi --clean' to clear them from

Since the build version did not change when the packages were signed,

Standardisation is a good thing. I have an app with a spec file for Suse. I
gave up trying to modify it for Mandriva. Quite apart from standardisation
however, there are packages in one distro with a different name from another.
I would like to see a switch added to the rpm command to tell it: &quot;This
package of mine fits that dependency you asked for.&quot;

A tarball I tried to compile recently (brand new on Freshmeat) specified
dependencies older than what I had installed. What I had didn't match. That
may be sloppy coding. An &quot;or newer&quot; spec would have fixed it.

Who will bell the cat? I am afraid that if you want this Alliance, you will
need to be its driving force. And you will need to define much more precisely
what your aims are.

<PRE>Le mercredi 23 f&#233;vrier 2011 &#224; 14:35 +0000, Andr&#233; Machado a &#233;crit :
&gt;<i> We all know that, nowadays, Ubuntu is the distribution most widely used and
</I>&gt;<i> known worldwide. Many users are afraid to try other distros because they are
</I>&gt;<i> accustomed to Ubuntu and many remasters are Ubuntu or Debian based.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> We also know that RPM-based distros are not anything DEB-based distros and often
</I>&gt;<i> are more stable and faster. URPMI is incomparably superior to apt-get.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> The four major community-driven RPM-based distros nowadays are: Mageia,
</I>&gt;<i> OpenSuse, Fedora and PCLinuxOS.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> All these distros can work together to promote the use of RPM distros and help
</I>&gt;<i> in their own developments.
</I>
It is already the case. For example, during Libre Software Meeting in
Bordeaux, we ( AUFML, french user group of Mandriva ) shared a booth and
helped each others on logistic issues with Fedora-fr and Opensuse.
Ie we managed to keep the booth when others were eating, going to
conferences, we shared boxes and so on.

And that's not limited to rpm distribution, I see the same kind of help
from Debian, Ubuntu, etc.

&gt;<i> Even though the development team mageia is busy with the roadmap of development,
</I>&gt;<i> I would propose the creation of...
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> T H E [ R E D ] A L L I A N C E
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> ... which would be a global network where developers and users of these
</I>&gt;<i> distributions could exchange knowledge and information and share resources to
</I>&gt;<i> assist in developing mutual their distros.
</I>
We already do that.
We do share patches with others distributions ( they all are on the web,
and packagers often check them ), we push our fix upstream so everybody
benefit from this, and all specs files are published. And there is open
bugtracker, open code.

Sure, we can improve, and for example, there is work going on like
Sophie indexing spec file, work like systemd to push initscripts
upstream, work on freedesktop for menus files, etc.

There is mailing lists for discussion on freedesktop.org, and packagers
often know others packagers, and participate to conferences, etc. For
example, colin went to opensuse conference, I went to fudcon in zurich,
etc ( and almost went to UDS in Bruxelles ).

&gt;<i> Today we know that a RPM developed for OpenSuse may not work properly in Fedora.
</I>&gt;<i> With the Red Alliance, we could create a common development basis, through which
</I>&gt;<i> could enhance the compatibility and interoperability of programs developed for
</I>&gt;<i> these distros with the establishment of common guidelines and further increase
</I>&gt;<i> market share and convince users that they will feel at home.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> The goal is not to merge all the distros, but work together. The idea should be
</I>&gt;<i> further developed, but this seems an appropriate way.
</I>
Well, more precisely, what do you have in mind ?

<PRE>That is the point: why create a spec file for each distro? Would be good if I
create one unique RPM and can install it in ANY RPM distro; Still, would be good
if the configuration file of application foo was in the same place on distro A

<PRE>Well, more precisely, what do you have in mind ?

Currently, I'm thinking in two main goals:

I. Create a website where:

 a. we can promote RPM-based distros usage to general public;

 b. users of these distros can give and receive free communitary
 support from other users (like a social network);

 c. developers can share your knowledge and resources. This can be
 done with creation of a knowledge base and git-like repository;

 d. users can make donations to your preferred distros and projects;

 e. we can help independent developers to packing your applications.

But, before this is done, it's necessary that we achieve another goal:

II. Make agreement with main RPM distros to standardization:

 a. Standardize naming and versioning of packages
 Nowadays, it's common that, in one distro, a package be called
 'samba' and, in another, 'smb'. Thus, if we try install a
 package made for the first one in the second, we can break
 dependence tree. Standardizing the naming and the versioning
 would solve this issue. Comnpatibility with current distro
 versions could be achieved by dummy packages.

 b. Standardize file locations
 Even if you can install a package made for a distro to another
 without breaking the dependency tree, can occur in the
 application does not find the libraries or configuration files
 that need, being necessary to create symbolic links to them.
 Standardize the location of these files would solve the problem.
 Comnpatibility with current and old distro versions could be
 achieved by symlinks created automatically during install.

 c. Standardize init scripts
 By similar reasons.

Of course, this won't be easy, but let's intone this slogan: &quot;Pack once, install
everywhere&quot;.

<PRE>Le mercredi 23 f&#233;vrier 2011 &#224; 17:11 +0000, Andr&#233; Machado a &#233;crit :
&gt;<i> That is the point: why create a spec file for each distro?
</I>
Even if this was a rethoric question, I think I can provides a answer.
One of the main reason is each distribution have different policy,
different version of rpm, different technologies.

Example :
Mandriva only have 1 supported version of python ( due to ressources
reason ), Fedora aim to support more than one ( ie, jython, ironpython )
( see <A HREF="http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/SIGs/Python">http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/SIGs/Python</A> ). This lead to
difference in specfile, as would a difference of version of the base
version ( ie 3 vs 2 ).

2nd example :
Mageia do not plan to use systemd for now, but Fedora and Mandriva do.
So how can we do a spec file that work on both cases, except by
duplicating the work ( ie writing systemd file and still initscript ) ?

3rd example :
Mandriva is using rpm 5, and there is some changes ( like file trigger
that use a different syntax ). Should they wait on everybody to use the
same version so they can use the newer syntax ?

Since Mandriva used a patch that was not at this time in Fedora, should
we avoid this ?

&gt;<i> Would be good if I
</I>&gt;<i> create one unique RPM and can install it in ANY RPM distro;
</I>
Well, in the end, that would mean to have only 1 rpm distribution. If
there is no functional difference between all rpm distributions, that
effectively mean we do have only one distribution, with just minor
change such as wallpapers and installed set of packages.

&gt;<i> Still, would be good
</I>&gt;<i> if the configuration file of application foo was in the same place on distro A
</I>&gt;<i> and distro B, See: some time ago, installing Lazarus in Mandriva meaned create
</I>&gt;<i> many symlinks to app works. Why?
</I>
If the rpm ( from the distribution ) required to create symlink after
installation to work, that's a bug.
If this is not the case, then the question should be answered on a case
by case basis.

&gt;<i> This is counterproductive and only reinforces
</I>&gt;<i> the impression that Linux is difficult to use. The idea is not that everyone
</I>&gt;<i> uses the same package installer or configuration utility, but that system basis
</I>&gt;<i> is the same.
</I>
What make people think this is difficult is also the idea itself and the
fact that we keep repeating it. I never seen anybody saying &quot;cell phones
all use a different UI, this is too hard, I will not buy one&quot;. Yet, cell
phones is clearly a market where there is interface fragmentation, often
obscure concepts, stupid bugs and where I have helped people on their
phone more than once.

So if people can find proper help ( and that mean help with a physical
person, ie in your LUG, or real documentation, stuff like that ), they
no longer find this to be difficult, and that's IMHO

&gt;<i> Beyond, can someone please tell this idea for a OpenSuse, Fedora and PCLinuxOS
</I>&gt;<i> representative to see if they accept?
</I>
Well, I think it is up to you, as this is your idea and your project.
You can contact them quite easily, either on irc, or on their mailling
list.

For fedora, i think you can find on :
<A HREF="https://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/fedora-list">https://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/fedora-list</A> or
<A HREF="https://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/fedora-devel-list">https://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/fedora-devel-list</A>

For opensuse :
<A HREF="http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-packaging/">http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-packaging/</A>
<A HREF="http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-project/">http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-project/</A>
follow instructions on <A HREF="http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Mailing_lists">http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Mailing_lists</A>

I assume that you can also contact centos :
<A HREF="http://lists.centos.org/mailman/listinfo/centos-devel">http://lists.centos.org/mailman/listinfo/centos-devel</A>
<A HREF="http://lists.centos.org/mailman/listinfo/centos">http://lists.centos.org/mailman/listinfo/centos</A>

For pclinuxos, I never met anyone at any developer or free software
meeting I did since 7 years, but I guess you can contact them using this
form : <A HREF="http://www.pclinuxos.com/?page_id=165">http://www.pclinuxos.com/?page_id=165</A>

And for Mandriva, I think you can send a email on cooker
<A HREF="https://ml.mandriva.net/wws/info/cooker">https://ml.mandriva.net/wws/info/cooker</A>

And for unity linux : <A HREF="http://unity-linux.org/contact/">http://unity-linux.org/contact/</A>

Now, I think you may have overlook the various issues involved in
packaging, and, before contacting everybody ( and likely have people
understand where you are wrong 5 times ), I would suggest to look a
little bit around.

IMHO, you should try to become a packager ( and become one ), try on
more than one distribution, discuss with people who write the policy and
there you would be in a much better position to realize your
objectives.

And also take a look on previous attempts of doing so, as you are not
the first one to attempt this ( and so, you will likely find other
people to help you this way ).
