> > > is IMHO clearly suboptimal.
> > >
> > > ( ie, 1 step more to get application , on a total of 3, that's a lot ).
> >
> > Does it happen ? In a default Mandriva KDE installation I already have
> > more than 10 internet applications.
>
> I do not use kde, but that doesn't sound good.

>
> This would requires some testing and measures to see which is faster,
> which is more confusing. Fcrozat did some tests, but I think the report
> were not published :/
>
> > And KDE gives you the

>

>>> So in the mean time, we have to rely on guess made from packagers on
>>> what would be the best application to use _if_ people did install more
>>> applications and didn't remove the installed default one, nor
>>> cleaned/move the entry ( because for some reason, it seems that no one
>>> ever do it ).
>>
>> But this is flawed logic, IF a user manually installs a new app that means
>> he is interested in using it, so it shouldn't be hidden away behind
>> "More". There is no guessing involved for apps that aren't installed by
>> default, those apps that a users needs to install manually should NEVER
>> disappear behind "More"!

Agree 100%

> Well, personal experiences differ, we all know that. Although I can
> understand the reasoning behind this last remark, I can't remember
> that I ever read a user complaining about the "More" feature within
> years of forum reading. Either people really did not regard it as such
> a nuisance or if they did they easily changed it with the menue
> editor.
> I also experienced that people who install apps the manual way tend to
> place them on the desktop (create an icon) rather for quick access
> than care for putting them in the menue.

I have never complained about that *very* *annoying* feature. And I am
sure many others annoyed by it haven't complained in a forum.
Having a nice stable easily accessible menu, in alphabetical order works
best for me.
(If there are too many items for one column in the menu page,
automatically add a parallel column, as used to be the case.)
If someone wants that cache-cache behavior, at least it should be an
option, and not fixed. (e.g,, as in Microsoft windows, where
cache-cache is the default, but it can be disabled with a readily
accessible option.)
Sure, you can always rearrange the menu, but when eventually the
application is uninstalled, the changes will remain in the menu. Another
unnecessary nuisance.

my 2 cents :)

>>>>> I don't think so. Several Mandriva releases ago, there was no such
>>>>> "More"
>>>>> entry, but real sub-categories in the menu. Then it changed for
>>>>> what we have
>>>>> now, but that wasn't a change in the .desktop files, rather a menu
>>>>>
>>>>> configuration. I guess that was a decision meant to bring
>>>>> "simplicity",
>>>>
>>>> Yes, and that's a choice that can be backed by several studies on the
>>>> subject, the working memory have been estimated to be 7 chunks of
>>>> information ( between 5 and 9 is a wildly accepted range ). I remember
>>>> having seen a studie saying that it was less than this, but I cannot
>>>> find it ( and it was on slashdot, so this may have been wrong ).
>>>>
>>>> So presenting only ~7 chunks of information ( ie ~7 items in menu ) is
>>>> better according to the current cognitive model used, such as this one
>>>> :
>>>> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_information_processor_model

What these studies refer to is how much information the average person
can keep in short-term memory. Many such studies seem to indicate 3-5
items (depending on the person), others give as much as 7-9.
The variance is probably related to the complexity of information used
in the study, or how it was presented. (And maybe also whether the
subjects were fully awake at the time :) )

This doesn't relate to menu display, which is related to the ability to
find what one wants in reading a list.
By default the Mandriva menus are displayed in alphabetical order, which
is useful to anyone familiar with the latin alphabet.

In the past (it could have been "Mandrake" or even "RedHat"), when there
were too many items in a menu page to display in a single column, the
overflow items were displayed in a second column. I don't remember if
that was a special configuration, but I found it much better than the
scrolling that we can encounter otherwise, when there are too many items
for one column.
And certainly much better than an additional submenu.
I see this overflow column concept as being much like tabbed browsing.
Until one has seen it, it can be difficult to appreciate the advantage.
But once one has tried it, it becomes almost essential.

>> Eh, isn't that a reason to switch *back* to the two-level system, not to
>> keep the current system?
>
> I do not think so. What chunk of informations do you take in account ?
>
>> I have about 15-30 entries in everyone of Internet, Office, Audio/Video,
>> Tools, Tools->System submenus.
>
> By submenu, you mean the "more" submenu ? I fail to understand what do
> you have exactly, can you provides a screenshot ?

Those menus all all submenus (or submenus of submenus) of the main menu
page. (Levels 2 and 3, if you prefer.)

>> With a two-level system it would be considerably less and closer to the
>> ~7 you mention.
>
> Depend, what is the process that you are wanting to improve ?
> ( and closer is not good enough, even if 15 is nearer to 7 than 20,
> that's still too much and a different process is used ( according to
> studies ))

I don't know of any study that says that 7 or 9 is too many items for a
_menu_. Very few menu pages have that few items.
However, I do see a disadvantage of having to scroll a menu with too
many items for one fully visible column. Whence my suggestion of
reverting to the 2-column (or overflow column) menu display as described
above.

my 2 cents :)

>
> Samuel

Gnome doesn't put recently used applications on top. (Just switched to
test it.)
Neither does the default Mandriva menu, which I usually use. (At least
not by default.) One problem with that feature is that it can be
difficult to know where to look for a particular app, because it won't
always be in the same place. But if there were a line separating recent
and others, and both groups were in alphabetical order, it would be
easier to find things. But I don't if know any menu system does that.
I don't know if Gnome uses a "Plus/More" menu, as the menu lists are
much shorter than the Mandriva menus.
(Partly because much is missing from the tools menus. But also the
icons are smaller, which is nice. Unfortunately some submenus aren't
translated.)

Mandriva menus do use a "Plus" submenu. (called that in french.)
Previously sometimes has been used in a menu with only about 7 items,
but currently only appears in one menu approaching the bottom of the page.
(The overflow menu had one item, I removed one item from the parent, and
the overflow menu is still there with one item.)

> you want LVM to control. It lets you create multiple "virtual"
> partitions each of which includes one or more physical partitions. In
> the minimal case, you can partition exactly as you would without LVM,
> but make each of the Mageia partitions an LV formatted as ext4 (or
> whatever) rather than a physical ext4.
>
> The difference is that later on if you need to expand one of these 1-1
> LVM partitions, all you do is create another physical partition
> *somewhere* - either on that physical disk or another you add - and tell
> LVM to make that new physical partition part of the LV you want to

> magically increases in size by the size of the new physical partition
> you added.
>
> Using LVM for some or all of Mageia has no effect on your ability to use
> standard partitioning for other partitions on these disks.

It occurs to me that LVM (which I have only tested a long time ago)
would play nicely on a large disk with a gpt partition table.
Just divide the disk into a lot of reasonably-sized partitions (the
limit for a default gpt table is 128 (primary) partitions, and let LVM
combine them as appropriate, being dynamically reassociable as needed.

Then if you want to do a clean install of a new Mageia (or other)
release, could you just reformat the partitions you want (excluding
/home and whatever other partitions you want to keep), without problem
with LVM ?

If so, that would be nice.
The trick of course would be to ensure that you assign directories to
partitions in an appropriate manner.

some random thoughts ... :)
