</I>&gt;&gt;<i> Plus, what type of vulnerability. Plus, for what branch of the
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> software (I guess, for instance, phpBB 2.x and 3.x are a bit
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> different).
</I>&gt;<i> You are right but all that requires a lot more time to investigate which
</I>&gt;<i> I currently don't have.
</I>&gt;<i> But in any case it's hard to argue with 7 (fudforum) vs. 723 (phpBB).
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>The phpBB site had an explanation - serious errors version 2.
They also had version 3 audited for security ...
&gt;&gt;<i> What we do need is a forum that matches our needs; actually pretty
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> basic, but maybe for having good admin features, excellent
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> hackability, extensability, being well documented, having a nice

</I>&gt;&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> Agreed and I'd say that all of the FOSS packages I listed generally
</I>&gt;<i> fulfill these criteria (each with their own strong points).
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> So, requirement #1: open source license (as in <A HREF="http://opensource.org/">http://opensource.org/</A> ).
</I>&gt;&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> Well out of the ones I listed that is:
</I>&gt;<i> phpBB - GPL
</I>&gt;<i> myBB - GPL
</I>&gt;<i> FUDforum - GPL
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> this page is also quite useful:
</I>&gt;<i> <A HREF="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_Internet_forum_software_(PHP">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_Internet_forum_software_(PHP</A>)
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> I was actually doing this comparison not primarily for the future
</I>&gt;<i> Mageia forum, but because I'm looking for a good forum software for a
</I>&gt;<i> personal project.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> I had mostly decided to take myBB since it has a very good reputation
</I>&gt;<i> and is considered relatively secure (and this check I did confirms
</I>&gt;<i> that), but since I discovered FUDforum a few days ago and tested it on
</I>&gt;<i> the weekend I have now decided that FUDforum is the ideal choice for me
</I>&gt;<i> (and IMHO also for the Mageia forum).
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>To me, the translations available, and their quality, are important
factors for forum software.
The phpBB presentation on their site looks good, and they have a lot of
translations available - as plugins.
But the FUDforum site - and the translations available - is really
impressive.
Many languages are available out-of-the-box, and many more can be added.
Also, translations can be readily created - or corrected - which is a
big plus, as we won't be dependant on others to correct simple
translation errors, or add new translations.
I don't know the features in detail, but from the presentation on the
respective sites, I would also choose FUDforum for Mageia.

My 2 cents

To be precise, some people are actively working on getting a place in
datacenter, and some servers. Then we will have to rack them, install
them, then setup ldap, and svn and git, and build nodes, and job
dispatcher, take care of bugzilla, mirrors, various web application
( like the one who manage the maintainers ), likely forums and wiki,
some infrastructure for translaters, create the association, some
mailling lists and setup a organisation ( ie, who do what for marketing,
communication, translation, qa, testing, and using what ressources ),
try to have more server, do some test of iso creation, and ots of
various thing that I left.

Yet, you are right that we should give more information on what we are
doing, we planed to publish the roadmap once we have finished it ( this
and the Manifesto but romain have been working on this since a few days,
and I guess no one would find unusual that such a important document
take lots of time ).

<PRE>EN (lecteurs fran&#231;ais, je vous conseille de lire ci-dessous)

Okay, - What is the governance of this project ?

I believe that the old worker of Mandriva are the most activs. But it is
not very false when person like Mahteus (or me), are feeling a problem.

I don't doubt that the governance of the project is not null ... But we,
others of &quot;who maintain the list&quot;, we don't see anything.

Who is actually the captain, or most contributers ?
Who is the team who decide the rules like : to put TXT format and not
HTML format in the mail of the list ? Or to speak only in english ? Or
to do only RPM and not DEB ? This 3 late days, I have only seen this
kind of movement.

So, I think I (and a lot of others) will take more confidence in this
project if certain person said what they do.

We have a wiki for write what each can do. But we have nothing for
&quot;institute&quot; what will be done, when, and who do what ?

Just a first question : when and where will be done the first meeting of
the foundation in France ? I want participate, I will take a day of
holidays in my company for the creation and write of the statuts of this
foundation. But, it seems that someone is back the decision, and now,
actually, I don't see who (or which group).

Mageia will not survive if you make the sames mistake of the last
managers of Mandriva. For me it was : decision in dark and no visibility
to the community.
This community is not only maked from hard-coders for fun ... but also
people not exclusively technicians but can bring a lot to a community
(which I also learned to make ABAP / java / Ada95 10 years ago, but now,
I am no more exactly in this job ... and can give a little part of me).

FR (the french version is better, but sorry I not absolutely sure of my
english - up)

Bon.

l'ombre sans donner une visibilit&#233; &#224; la communaut&#233;. La dite communaut&#233;

&gt;<i> To be precise, some people are actively working on getting a place in
</I>&gt;<i> datacenter, and some servers. Then we will have to rack them, install
</I>&gt;<i> them, then setup ldap, and svn and git, and build nodes, and job
</I>&gt;<i> dispatcher, take care of bugzilla, mirrors, various web application
</I>&gt;<i> ( like the one who manage the maintainers ), likely forums and wiki,
</I>&gt;<i> some infrastructure for translaters, create the association, some
</I>&gt;<i> mailling lists and setup a organisation ( ie, who do what for marketing,
</I>&gt;<i> communication, translation, qa, testing, and using what ressources ),
</I>&gt;<i> try to have more server, do some test of iso creation, and ots of
</I>&gt;<i> various thing that I left.

<PRE>&gt;<i> Okay, - What is the governance of this project ?
</I>
Provisional governance of the project is in the hands of Mandriva ex-employees

&gt;<i> I believe that the old worker of Mandriva are the most activs. But it is not
</I>&gt;<i> very false when person like Mahteus (or me), are feeling a problem.
</I>
Which problems?????

&gt;<i> I don't doubt that the governance of the project is not null ... But we,
</I>&gt;<i> others of &quot;who maintain the list&quot;, we don't see anything.
</I>
You don't see because you don't want to. I follow all Mageia MLs and
read Romain's and Anne's mails. Just because they don't write every 20
minutes it means that they are playing in the beach.

&gt;<i> Who is actually the captain, or most contributers ?
</I>
There's no captain yet. That's why you must put your name in the wiki.
Then, with people who joined in the wiki, teams will be formed.

&gt;<i> Who is the team who decide the rules like : to put TXT format and not HTML
</I>&gt;<i> format in the mail of the list ? Or to speak only in english ? Or to do only
</I>&gt;<i> RPM and not DEB ? This 3 late days, I have only seen this kind of movement.
</I>
It's just common sense. HTML mails are &quot;heavier&quot; that plain text. You
don't need lot of emoticons crap to make your point here.

&gt;<i> So, I think I (and a lot of others) will take more confidence in this
</I>&gt;<i> project if certain person said what they do.
</I>
They do it. But maybe you can make it better and create a whole
foundation in 24 hours.

&gt;<i> We have a wiki for write what each can do. But we have nothing for
</I>&gt;<i> &quot;institute&quot; what will be done, when, and who do what ?
</I>
As they said in ML, Wiki is just provisional for people who wants to
join Mageia.

&gt;<i> Just a first question : when and where will be done the first meeting of the
</I>&gt;<i> foundation in France ? I want participate, I will take a day of holidays in
</I>&gt;<i> my company for the creation and write of the statuts of this foundation.
</I>&gt;<i> But, it seems that someone is back the decision, and now, actually, I don't
</I>&gt;<i> see who (or which group).
</I>
OK, maybe I'm being a little reiterative but, what foundation?????
They are building it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

&gt;<i> Mageia will not survive if you make the sames mistake of the last managers
</I>&gt;<i> of Mandriva. For me it was : decision in dark and no visibility to the
</I>&gt;<i> community.
</I>&gt;<i> This community is not only maked from hard-coders for fun ... but also
</I>&gt;<i> people not exclusively technicians but can bring a lot to a community (which
</I>&gt;<i> I also learned to make ABAP / java / Ada95 10 years ago, but now, I am no
</I>&gt;<i> more exactly in this job ... and can give a little part of me).
</I>
Congratulations for your skills, but you should stop writing FUD
because you are not helping much. And you are creating panic between
newcomers. You don't affect me, but many newcomers will think that
this is &quot;mafia&quot; and mageia wants their money, and meetings are in dark
basements.

Stop FUDing, PLEASE!!!!!

Sorry for the lack of news, but people are very busy setting up basic
infrastructure, association, organisation, so that everybody can work
together efficiently in a near futur.

More news will be coming soon, please be patient.

This is only the begining of the project. There is a bottleneck at the

These are very generic arguments such that they are common to almost
very FOSS discussion as are the traditional arguments of emacs vs. vi
or Mac vs. PC or even email etiquette . That these types of arguments
continue supports to the conclusion that they are 1) unresolvable and
2) unimportant in the bigger picture. While fun, they are best avoided.

As I understand it, those doing the &quot;grunt&quot;' work are busy
establishing the infrastructure that will permit Mageia to be
launched. They need our patience and our support.

Since Mageia is a fork of Mandriva, the initial release --as best as I
can tell from what I've read-- will be made as soon as possible and
will likely be Mandriva2010.1 (or cooker) with cosmetic changes and
likely the elimination of unmaintained or problematic packages.

Given all that, it would probably be most productive for most of us
here, if not directly involved in the dad-to-day mechanics of creating
Mageia, to:
1) contribute financially if and when possible
2) volunteer to maintain packages
3) volunteer to maintain documentation
4) provide input on logos, icons and artwork
5) save our ideas of the &quot;ultimate&quot; software, desktop environments and
packaging managers until after the initial release when they can be be
debated and acted upon in a productive manner.

Gustavo &gt;
I don't realy understand your so impulsive reaction.
You speak of FUD, in an other response for someone else than me you
speak of &quot;rebellion&quot; and your respones to questions / suggestions looks
agressives.
My feeling in front of your responses is like this discussion :
Q&gt; What is the direction ?
Your response &gt; Adopt my point of view, shut-up and wait.

My volonte is not to build a rebellion and take the power, or to make
the newbies afraid.

The kind of responses I expected was just :
- Ex-employes are making the governance (oopps, you have responded
thanks for that ;-) )
- We have in prevision to make a meeting in 1-2 weeks (or 1-2 monthes).
Or even : They have no prevision at this time ... because in our bases
little team no decision is realy take in this sens at this time.

Or look your speach :
&gt; There's no captain yet. That's why you must put your name in the wiki.
Of course there are captains : ex-employes !!! Because they are the
launchers of this movement. Mageia is their baby, and they construct it
as they want at least the time to build a structure.
I have certainly not the pretention to say I'm better than they, do
quicker or etc ...

 &gt; They do it.
You seems speaking with a lot of authority. Are you an ex-employes ? So,
why did not you said &quot;we are doing it&quot; and no &quot;they&quot; ?
If you are an ex-employes, I will listen yours points because you have
the knowledges and the wisdom. In other cases, that's will be a little
more difficult to follow you ...

I am absolutly able to understand that it is difficult to build
infrastructure and foundation. I just remind to all (perhaps in
particular the captains defacto) that without vision, the boat can not
go far. People need vision, perhaps not immediately but not too late.

For example (and to finish by a constructive suggestion), is it possible
to write the persons listed on this page (<A HREF="https://www.mageia.org/">https://www.mageia.org/</A>) are
temporarly the leaders in the mailing-list ? We need this for give
directions to the reflexions into the mailing-list.
